Het verschil tussen jou en jouw zit in de functie van het woord dat erna komt. Jouw is een bezittelijk voornaamwoord en gebruik je vóór een zelfstandig naamwoord, zoals in jouw fiets of jouw idee. Jou gebruik je na een voorzetsel, zoals bij, voor of met.
In de zin bij jou thuis hoort jou bij het voorzetsel bij. Het woord thuis is hier een bijwoord, geen zelfstandig naamwoord. Je zegt dus niet bij jouw thuis, net zoals je ook nooit bij mijn thuis zou zeggen. De test met mij helpt: bij mij thuis klopt, dus schrijf je ook bij jou thuis.
